Using Chunking Strategy to Enhance Teaching and Learning

Instructor: Laurent Ndeze

EADChunking is a strategy used to organize large instructional material into sections, parts, or categories so that the material is easier to understand and recall. Educational psychologists have found that chunking course content reduces information overload and enhances learning. A chuck could refer to a description of a geographical structure on a map, behaviors of specific chemicals, cultural norms of a specific group of people, etc. The concept is applicable to a broad range of subject matter. Chunking is based on the premise that information is processed in short-term memory before it is transferred into long-term memory. By organizing content into chunks, we increase the learner’s attention span and chances of retrieval of that information not only from short memory but also from long-term memory. In this workshop, we will examine different types of content chunks, related research, and how you can apply them to your teaching.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply different chunking techniques including multi-media tools
  • Explain how chunking techniques can boost student engagement and motivation
  • Integrate chunking techniques into course assessment methods
  • Identify two or three chunking techniques that would be directly applicable to your teaching

Come to this one-hour class to explore these and other questions about multiple-choice questions.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • explain the elements of an effective multiple-choice question.

Discover the Intelligent features of PowerPoint 365

EADWhether we realize it or not, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is all around us and playing an active role in our daily lives. Every time we open our Facebook newsfeed or do a Google search, AI works in the background. AI technology allows us to work smarter and more efficiently.
Using Office 365’s AI technology, you will see how PowerPoint inserts design elements and visualizes data while still allowing you to maintain control of your slides. With the tedious design process automated, you can spend more time focusing on your content. This session will familiarize you with PowerPoint’s AI technology and give you tips for creating professionally designed presentations.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Define artificial intelligence and how it benefits you in creating beautiful slides.
  • Explain how PowerPoint 365 enables you to create slideshows more efficiently with Designer.
  • List 2-3 intelligent design features that you will integrate into future PowerPoint presentations.

Instructor: Philip Bonner

Participants will investigate and discuss possible reasons for a disproportionate negative effect of lecturing-only on successful learning by underrepresented students.
