Pedagogical Discussions is an annual workshop series that introduces a new theme each academic year. For the academic year 2023-24, ELITE is presenting a series of six workshops focused on Trends in Higher Education. These workshops will cover a range of topics, including adopting a human-centered approach to digital learning environments, utilizing data analysis to inform decision-making, mastering the art of storytelling, and upskilling and continuing education. Pedagogical Discussion # 1: Trends in Higher Education: Adopting a Human-centered Approach in a Digital Learning Environment

Building a sense of belonging in college courses is important for student success, and this includes online, remote, and hybrid courses. But how can instructors build that sense of belonging in a digital environment? Come to this one-hour roundtable discussion and share ideas on inclusive instruction in online and remote courses.

By the end of this roundtable discussion, participants will be able to:
  • Explain what inclusive instruction looks like in online and remote courses.
  • Share ideas with colleagues on how to build a sense of belonging in digital learning environments.

Pedagogical Discussion # 2: Trends in Higher Education: Analyzing and Acting on Data to Advance the College’s Mission

In the coming years, colleges are going to need to make data-informed decisions in the areas of student recruitment and retention, student success, and faculty and staff well-being. Colleges will need to know how to collect and interpret this data to make wise decisions. Please attend this one-hour roundtable discussion and share your ideas on data analytics in higher education in the coming years.

By the end of this roundtable discussion, participants will be able to:
  • Explain why making data-informed decisions in higher education is more important than ever.
  • Share their ideas on how Montgomery College can leverage data to make sound decisions.

Pedagogical Discussion # 3: Trends in Higher Education: Supporting the College through Storytelling

Promoting higher education institutions can pose significant challenges in today’s competitive industry. It is essential not only to understand the specific interests of our target student demographic but also to effectively showcase how Montgomery College can bring students’ dreams and aspirations to life. To attract new students, we must craft a compelling narrative that accentuates our comprehensive value and unique characteristics. In essence, it is crucial for our faculty and staff to become proficient storytellers, adept at sharing Montgomery College’s tale. Join us for a stimulating one-hour roundtable discussion where we can exchange ideas on innovative approaches to promote Montgomery College’s unique story.

By the end of this roundtable discussion, participants will be able to:
  • Express how telling the College’s story can enhance enrollment.
  • Share ideas with colleagues on how to tell our story effectively.
