Pedagogical Discussions is an annual workshop series that introduces a new theme each academic year. For the academic year 2023-24, ELITE is presenting a series of six workshops focused on Trends in Higher Education. These workshops will cover a range of topics, including adopting a human-centered approach to digital learning environments, utilizing data analysis to inform decision-making, mastering the art of storytelling, and upskilling and continuing education. Pedagogical Discussion # 4: Trends in Higher Education: Supporting Non-traditional College Students through Upskilling and Continuing Education Programs

Higher education has seen an increased investment in upskilling and continuing education. It’s important to acknowledge that while the traditional college student still exists, the student body is more diverse than in previous generations. Mature students are seeking opportunities for upskilling, while many recent high school graduates are searching for alternative educational pathways. This trend also includes a greater reliance on college-business partnerships. ChatGPT took the world by storm in 2022, and the pervasiveness of AI has only grown since then. While many are concerned about this new tool, AI allows professors to deliver more engaging learning experiences to their students. ChatGPT, Bard, and other AI tools can enhance lesson plans and learning materials, providing a greater range of options for students. Attend this one-hour discussion and share ideas about how AI can lead to stronger learning outcomes.
