Introduction

You are a part of a global effort to increase access to education and empower students through “open pedagogy.”  Open pedagogy is a “free access” educational practice that places you – the student – at the center of your own learning process in a more engaging, collaborative learning environment.  The ultimate purpose of this effort is to achieve greater social justice in our community in which the work can be freely shared with the broader community.  This is a renewable assignment that is designed to enable you to become an agent of change in your community through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  For this work, you will integrate the disciplines of Social Sciences; International Relations; Entrepreneurship to achieve SDG #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Target 8.1: Sustain per capita economic growth in accordance with national circumstances and, in particular, at least 7 per cent gross domestic product growth per annum in the least developed countries

Learning Objectives

After completing this assignment, students will be able to:

  • Analyze the principles of service-learning in the context of business and SDGs
  • Design a comprehensive service-learning plan incorporating business concepts and SDG goals
  • Evaluate the potential impact of their service-learning plan on the community and SDG targets

Purpose/Rationale

Students are expected to develop an understanding of business model concepts and the ability to design innovative and sustainable business models for a community in rural area where the business concepts and principles learned can be applied to implement a livelihood program for the marginalized group.

Instructions

  • 1. Research service-learning concepts and their application in business contexts
  • 2. Identify a community need that aligns with SDG 8 and SDG 4
  • 3. Develop a detailed service-learning plan that addresses the identified need
  • 4. Incorporate relevant business concepts into the service-learning plan
  • 5. Outline how the plan contributes to the achievement of SDG targets
  • 6. Present the service-learning plan to the class
