UNIT 3: LINEAR REGRESSION AND CORRELATION

When studying relationships between variables, it’s also useful to quantify the degree of association between them and derive a model to describe the data. It is extremely important, however, not to confuse association between two variables with causation.

TOPICS COVERED

  • Correlation Coefficient, [latex]r[/latex]
  • Causation vs. Correlation
  • Linear Regressions – Method of Least Squares for the best fit line
  • Predictions
  • Coefficient of Determination
LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Discuss basic ideas of linear regression and correlation
  • Create and interpret a line of best fit
  • Calculate and interpret the correlation coefficient, [latex]r[/latex], and coefficient of determination, [latex]r^2[/latex]
  • Calculate and interpret outliers
  • Use technology (Graphing calculators, Excel, R, etc.) to calculate correlation coefficient and the regression equation
