UNIT 5: CONFIDENCE INTERVALS (CI)

When estimating a population parameter by using a sample statistic, how well does an interval based on the sample statistic estimate the parameter? In this section, we will look at margin of errors and confidence intervals for estimating various population parameters and pay special attention to interpretation of confidence intervals.

TOPICS COVERED
  • Confidence Interval for the Mean
  • Confidence Interval for Population Proportions
  • Student-t vs z-distributions
  • Sample Size Calculations
LEARNING OUTCOMES
  • Calculate and interpret confidence intervals for estimating a population mean and a population proportion
  • Use technology to calculate margin of errors and confidence intervals
  • Interpret the Student’s t-probability distribution as the sample size changes
  • Discriminate between problems applying the normal and the Student’s t distributions
  • Calculate the sample size required to estimate a population mean and a population proportion given a desired
confidence level and margin of error
