What Does It Mean to Be Expressive?

Being expressive in communication is about more than just delivering a message—it’s about ensuring that message is clear, engaging, and inclusive across different communication modes. Whether speaking, writing, or using non-verbal cues, an expressive communicator conveys ideas with precision, adapts their style to different audiences, and integrates multiple forms of communication seamlessly.

An expressive communicator:

  • Demonstrates Proficiency in Verbal, Written, and Non-Verbal Communication – They understand how to effectively articulate ideas across different formats, ensuring clarity and coherence in speech, writing, and body language.
  • Communicates with Clarity and Structure – They organize their thoughts logically and deliver messages in a way that is easy to understand and impactful. They refine their structure and word choice to improve engagement.
  • Uses Proper Syntax, Grammar, and Mechanics – They pay attention to language rules, ensuring accuracy in their writing and speech. This allows them to communicate professionally and minimize misunderstandings.
  • Integrates Multiple Communication Modes – They combine verbal, written, and non-verbal cues to reinforce their message. They recognize that tone, facial expressions, posture, and written clarity all contribute to effective communication.
  • Practices Inclusive Language – They are intentional about the words they choose, avoiding biased language and using terminology that respects diversity. They create a communication environment where all individuals feel acknowledged and valued.
  • Enhances Communication Through Non-Verbal Cues – They recognize the power of body language, eye contact, gestures, and facial expressions in reinforcing or adjusting their verbal message.
  • Promotes Inclusivity and Connection – They consider how their communication can create a welcoming and respectful environment, recognizing the impact of language on different audiences.
