10/8 Using deliberative dialogues to enhance action planning and communication

Deliberative dialogues are structured discussions focused on concrete policies and challenges; the dialogue format allows participants to think through a problem together so that they emerge from the discussion with a better understanding of differences and commonalities. Since these dialogues focus on specific policies and actions, they teach and model positive and constructive exploration of disagreement and enable concrete action planning in departments and organizations. Attendees at this workshop will learn how to facilitate deliberative dialogues and will receive deliberative dialogue resources that can be adapted to a variety of settings. The primary focus of this workshop will be on using deliberative dialogues to enhance communication and concrete planning in the workplace.

10/8 Problem-Solving Styles – Adaptors, Innovators and Culture

Research shows that people are born with a dominant cognitive problem-solving style, defined as adaptive or innovative. Knowing one’s problem-solving style improves our ability to respect and manage differences when working with others, which increases the problem-solving potential of diverse teams. In this class, participants will assess their problem-solving style and practice integrative problem-solving. This involves going beyond treating adaption and innovation styles as mutually exclusive and recognizing what cultural dynamics are also in play.
