Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Define telehealth and explain its importance in healthcare.
  • Identify the features of common telehealth platforms (e.g., Google Meet).
  • Schedule and conduct a simulated telehealth visit.
  • Document a telehealth appointment using a basic template.
  • Reflect on challenges and develop strategies for effective virtual care communication.

Part 1: Warm-Up

 What is Telehealth?
Write down what you know about telehealth or virtual consultations:

  • Have you ever used telehealth for a doctor’s appointment or consultation? If yes, describe your experience:
    • Discuss with the class: What are the benefits of telehealth? Write down two:
      Benefit 1: _______________________________________
      Benefit 2: _______________________________________
    • What are the challenges of telehealth? Write down two:
      Challenge 1: _____________________________________
      Challenge 2: _____________________________________

In your own words, why is digital literacy important for telehealth?

Part 2: Exploring Google Meet

Overview of Telehealth Platforms:
Go to YouTube and search for “How to use Google Meet”. The video should be less than 7:00 minutes. Take notes on the following features:

  • How to schedule a Google meet.
  • How to start a video call.
  • How to share documents or screens during a call.
  • Write down one question you have about using Google Meet for telehealth.

Part 3: Setting Up Telehealth Appointments

Setting Up Telehealth Appointments
Use the sample patient scenario below to schedule a telehealth appointment in Google Meet:

Patient Name: Maria Lopez
Reason for Visit: Persistent headaches for the past two weeks
Preferred Date and Time: Wednesday, May 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM

Send an email to Maria, providing information about :

  • Date and Time:
  • Reason for Visit:
  • Link to the meeting

Part 4: Simulating a Telehealth Visit

Role-Playing a Telehealth Visit
Pair up with a partner. One of you will play the role of the CMA, and the other will play the patient. Use the following checklist to guide your telehealth visit:

  • Ensure proper audio and video setup (check microphone and camera).
  • Greet the patient and confirm their name and reason for the visit.
  • Ask the patient about their symptoms and concerns.
  • Provide appropriate recommendations or next steps.
  • Use the space below to jot down notes during your role-play:
    • Main Patient Concerns: ____________________________________________
    • Recommendations Given: ____________________________________________
  • Discuss with your partner: What technical issues (if any) did you encounter? How did you resolve them?
