4.6. Reviewing and revising

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify effective review strategies to reinforce their understanding of healthcare topics.
  • Collaborate in groups to create review plans for specific healthcare topics.
  • Analyze feedback to revise study habits and improve learning outcomes.
  • Develop a personalized review and revision plan incorporating feedback and effective study strategies.
  • Reflect on their study habits, adjust strategies as needed, and commit to a regular review schedule.

Part 1: Warm-Up Discussion

Discuss the following questions in pairs or small groups:

  • What strategies do you use to remember new information?
  • Do you prefer studying alone or with others? Why?
  • Have you ever changed your study habits after receiving feedback?
  • Which strategies work well for you, and why?

Be prepared to share your thoughts with the class.

Part 2: Exploring Review Strategies

Review the following review strategies and write a sentence about how you might use each strategy to study healthcare topics:

  • Flashcards for key terms and concepts:
How I would use this strategy: ____________________________
  • Study groups for collaborative learning:
How I would use this strategy: ____________________________
  • Summarizing notes and key points after each class:
How I would use this strategy: ____________________________
  • Scheduled review sessions (daily, weekly, and before exams):
How I would use this strategy: ____________________________

Discuss your answers as a class.

Part 3: Group Review Strategies

In small groups, your instructor will assign your group a specific healthcare topic (e.g., vital signs, patient communication, or interpreting medical charts).

Work together to create a review plan using the template below:

  • Review Plan Template: Topic: ________________________________________________________________
  • Review Schedule: (e.g., daily, twice a week) _____________________________________________________
  • Strategies to Use: (e.g., flashcards, study group discussions) ________________________________________
  • Why These Strategies Are Effective: __________________________________________________________

After 10 minutes, present your group’s review plan to the class.

Highlight:

  • The strategies you chose.
  • Why you believe these strategies will be effective for your topic.

Part 4: Learning from Feedback

Read the sample feedback below (or use your own feedback if available):
Positive Feedback Example:

“Your understanding of medical terminology is strong. Keep up the good work!”

Feedback for Improvement Example:

“You need to focus more on organizing your answers. Adding a clear structure to your responses will help.”

Answer the following questions individually:

  • What did you learn from the feedback?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________
  • How do you plan to revise your study strategies in response to the feedback?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________
  • Once you’ve written your reflection, pair up with a classmate and share your feedback and revision plan. Discuss any additional ideas for improvement.

Part 5: Developing Your Personalized Plan

Use the template below to create your personalized review and revision plan:

Personalized Review and Revision Plan Template:

Topics to Review: (e.g., medical terminology, patient care strategies)
Review Strategies to Use: (e.g., flashcards, summarizing notes, study groups)
Schedule for Review Sessions: (e.g., daily, weekly, or before exams)
Feedback to Incorporate: (e.g., focus on organization, practice using medical terminology)
How I Will Hold Myself Accountable: (e.g., set reminders, track progress)

Share your plan in small groups or with the class. Discuss:

  • How you plan to stick to your review schedule.
  • Any challenges you might face and how you will overcome them.

Part 6: Wrap-Up and Reflection

Reflect on today’s lesson and answer the following questions:

  • What is one new review strategy you learned today?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________
  • How do you plan to use feedback to improve your study habits?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________
  • How will regular review sessions help you succeed in your studies?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________
  • Share one takeaway from the lesson with the class. Write down an idea shared by another student that you found helpful:
    Classmate’s Idea: ____________________________________________
