3.6. Collaborative Learning (study skills)
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Understand the concept of collaborative learning and its importance in healthcare.
- Practice effective communication and teamwork during group discussions.
- Present information clearly to peers, reinforcing their understanding of medical instruments and concepts.
- Provide and receive constructive feedback to improve communication and teamwork skills.
- Reflect on the value of collaboration and feedback in learning and professional growth.
Part 1: Warm-up
What is collaborative learning?
- Write down what you think “collaborative learning” means.
- Why do you think teamwork is important in healthcare?
- How do you think working in groups could help you better understand CMA concepts?
Part 2: Collaborative Learning
Read the paragraph below and answer the multiple-choice questions.
Collaborative learning means working together with others to solve problems, share knowledge, and learn new things. In healthcare, teamwork is very important. Clinical Medical Assistants (CMAs) often work with nurses, doctors, and patients. Learning to work in groups helps CMAs improve communication skills and better understand complex medical tasks.
Study Group Discussions: Exploring Healthcare Concepts
In your group of 3-4, use the worksheet below to guide your discussion. Choose one instrument for your group presentation.
- What do you already know about these concepts or instruments?
- What questions do you have about them?
- How are these tools or concepts used in a healthcare setting?
- Use the table below to take notes during your discussion:
| Concept/Instrument | What We Know | Questions We Have |
|---|---|---|
| Stethoscope | Used to listen to heart and lungs | How do you clean it properly? |
| Thermometer | ||
| Blood Pressure Cuff | ||
| Otoscope | ||
| Stethoscope |
Part 3: Presenting your findings
Each group will present their chosen medical instrument to the class. Be sure to:
- Speak clearly and confidently.
- Explain the instrument’s use, function, and importance.
- Use examples or demonstrations if possible.
- After each presentation, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. Write down one question you asked or found interesting.
Giving Feedback
After each presentation, complete this feedback form.
| Presentation Group One | One Thing I Liked 👍 | One Thing to Improve |
|---|---|---|
Part 4: Mini Presentations and record
Each group will:
- Choose one instrument.
- Use the internet or class materials to research:
- What it does
- How to use it
- Why it is important
- Record a 2-3 minute presentation.
Final Reflection
Read the sample reflection note, written by a student, and complete the gaps.
Now, write 3-5 sentences about your experience working with your group. Use the questions to guide your reflection.
- What did I learn from my group members?
- What was challenging?
- How did explaining a concept help me?
- How will I use these skills in healthcare?
