4.7. Adapting to computer-based testing

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the differences between traditional paper-based tests and computer-based tests.
  2. Identify the typical format and features of computer-based tests, including question types, navigation tools, and time management features.
  3. Apply effective test-taking strategies for computer-based tests.
  4. Practice taking a computer-based test in a simulated environment.
  5. Reflect on their experience and identify strategies to improve their performance in future computer-based tests.

Part 1: Introduction to Computer-Based Testing

Warm-Up: Discussion and Vocabulary
Discussion Questions (Pair or small group discussion)

  • Have you taken a test on a computer before? What was it like?
  • What do you think is easier about using a computer for testing?
  • What do you think is harder?

Match the word with its definition.

Part 2: Overview of Computer-Based Testing Format

Exploring the Format
Review the following features of computer-based tests:
Types of Questions:

  • Multiple choice
  • true/false
  • fill-in-the-blank
  • drag-and-drop, etc.

Navigation Tools:

  • buttons to move between questions
  • review answers,
  • flag questions for later.

Time Management Features:

  • Timers,
  • time alerts
  • progress indicators.

Look at the sample interface of a computer-based test projected by your instructor. Answer the following questions:

  • What tools are available to help you navigate the test?
  • How can you use the timer effectively during the test?

Part 3: Test-Taking Strategies for Computer-Based Tests

Strategy Handout
Review the following test-taking strategies:

  • Read instructions carefully:
    • Ensure you understand how to answer each question.
  • Manage your time:
    • Use the timer effectively and allocate time for each section.
  • Use navigation tools:
    • Familiarize yourself with how to review and change answers.
  • Stay focused:
    • Minimize distractions and avoid multitasking.

Part 4: Practice Computer-Based Test

Simulated Test
Take the practice computer-based test provided by your instructor. The test will include a variety of question types (e.g., multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank).
Use the strategies discussed earlier to complete the test.

Pay attention to:

  • Reading instructions carefully.
  • Managing your time.
  • Using navigation tools to review your answers.

After completing the test, answer the following questions:

  • What did you find easy or challenging about the test?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________
  • How did the strategies help you during the test?
    Your Answer: ____________________________________________

Part 5: Review and Discussion

Reflecting on the Practice Test

  • What was your overall experience with the computer-based test?
What strategies worked well for you?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Write down one idea shared by a classmate that you found helpful:
Classmate’s Idea: ____________________________________________

Part 6: Wrap-Up and Reflection

Planning for Future Tests

  • Write down one strategy you will use in future computer-based tests and explain how you plan to prepare:
    • Strategy: ____________________________________________
    • How I Will Prepare: ____________________________________
  • Share your strategy with the class or in small groups.
  • Discuss:
    • How you plan to stick to your strategy.
    • Any challenges you might face and how you will overcome them.
