Introduction to the Digital Edition

Montgomery College: Maryland’s First Community College (1946–1970) stands as the earliest written history of the College, documenting the foundation and formative years of an institution that would grow to serve tens of thousands across the region. Originally published in 1970, this book captures not only major milestones but also the mission, values, and vision that guided Montgomery College from its first days.

As someone who has worked to expand access to open educational resources and preserve institutional memory, this digitization project is personal to me. These stories matter. The people and places featured here represent more than a historical account, they are the roots of our identity. In bringing this book into digital form, we make the College’s early history more discoverable, accessible, and relevant to today’s learners and leaders.

The print copy held in the Montgomery College Library remains an important archival resource, but it has aged over time. With permission granted by the Office of General Counsel, and confirmed by General Counsel Timothy Dietz in an email dated August 5, 2024, we are now able to preserve and share this work through the Montgomery College Pressbooks Network. While the copyright remains with Montgomery College, this edition is published for internal educational use and long-term preservation.

This digital version stays true to the original publication while enabling greater flexibility for use in teaching, research, and community engagement. Page structure, images, and footnotes have been retained with care, and the digital format allows readers to explore the College’s beginnings with ease and depth.

It is my honor to serve as the curator and digital editor of this edition. I hope it inspires continued pride in our past and curiosity about how far we’ve come, and where we’re going next.
