Cohort 2023

Learning Objectives

Course Objective: Demonstrate knowledge of group fitness instructor techniques, safety considerations, injury prevention, cuing, and accommodations for special populations. HIP Activity: Collaborative Assignment. Description: Using the information presented in the course, students write the class body for a ten-minute group exercise program designed for a virtual audience using body weight exercises. The design must include modifications and considerations for accommodations to special populations to include hypertension and low back. Students will work in small groups (three students per group) and collaborate on the design.

Purpose/Rationale

The assignment provides students the flexibility to select different exercises and goals each semester. As industry trends and student interest will transform over time, students will have the flexibility to match the design with these parameters.

Instructions

Instructions: Using the information presented in the course, design a ten-minute virtual group exercise class body using body weight exercises. The exercises can be a focus of cardiorespiratory training, muscular fitness training, or a combination of both types of training. The class design must include 9 different exercises and/or combinations/drills using a variety of exercises for upper and lower body, include exercises in a variety of planes of movement, and include exercises with a variety of impact. The exercises must be able to be completed in a small footprint (i.e. yoga mat sized space) with body weight only (no equipment). Each student in the assigned group must personally select three of the exercises for the design. Then, as a group, organize the exercises into a thoughtful group exercise class experience, following the standards and guidelines for group exercise design. Identify the goals of the group exercise class and check that the goals and design are a match. Students are encouraged to use the open-source web resources provided in the course for ideas and inspirate for exercises selected. Citation for sources is required.

Format Requirements

The assignment submission will be completed using the provided assignment drop box location in Blackboard. Each student must submit an attached document with the specific three exercises selected for the assignment (total of three attachments). Include the student’s name on the document, the list and description of the three exercises selected, and the citations (APA) for the resources used to select the exercises. Next, a fourth and final document will be included in the assignment submission which is the final design for all nine exercises and full ten minutes. The final design must have all exercises listed in the exact order that they will be completed during the group exercise class. Include information regarding number of repetitions, length of time of each exercise, transitions, and sequencing. Be mindful of the 10-minute time limit. Use industry standards discussed in the course.

Rubric/Criteria

The assignment is progressive and mandatory. The assignment will be graded using the following criteria:

  1. Nine exercises are included (single exercises or nine separate combinations or drills).
  2. The number of repetitions and time for each exercise is clearly labeled.
  3. Exercises include a variety of planes, upper and lower body focus, and a variety of impact.
  4. Sequencing, transitions, repetitions, etc. follow industry standards.
  5. Assignment is submitted following the requirements outlined in the instructions.
  6. Design follows the guidelines and criteria for a virtual class.
  7. All exercises are body weight (no equipment) and can be completed in a small footprint (i.e. yoga mat sized space).
  8. The goals of the group exercise design are clearly identified and the design and goals match.
