Learning Objectives
Course Objectives: Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of exercise techniques and exercise modalities. Demonstrate safe and effective exercise instruction through effective communication, cueing, and motivational skills. HIP Activity: Collaborative Assignment and Service Learning. Description: Students will deliver (teach) a virtual group exercise class through community partnerships with Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC) and MC Wellness. The instructor of the course will create a single virtual group exercise design, using the collaborative work of the students from the assignment ‘Virtual Group Exercise Design.’ With the support of the course instructor, each student will lead and teach a portion of a virtual group exercise class. The class will be offered to participants in MC Wellness and EIMOC. After the virtual group exercise class, students will complete a written reflection of the experience.
Purpose/Rationale
Instructions
Instructions: Using the class design form provided by the instructor, each student will find their assigned exercise. Students will teach the assigned exercise for one minute. Students are required to record a video teaching this exercise, which will be a representation of how the student will teach during the live virtual class. Follow industry standards presented in the course for teaching a group exercise class related to safety, cueing, and motivational skills. Next, students will teach this exercise live during the virtual group exercise class. Last of all, students will write a three to five paragraph reflection essay about the experience. The reflections must start with a brief description of the student experience (describe the event, the community partnership, and the student role in the event) and then include responses to the follow questions:
- How did your work in the PHED 228 course assignments, classroom experiences, and assigned reading prepare you for teaching a virtual group exercise class? Be specific and provide a minimum of one example.
- What was the most challenging aspect of teaching a virtual group exercise class? Explain.
- How did you manage this challenge? Are you satisfied with how you managed the challenge? Explain.
- If you could repeat this experience, what would you do differently? Why?
- Now that you have completed this experience, how have your thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs about teaching group exercise been influenced or changed?
- What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
- How will you apply what you have learned from this experience to future work in the field of exercise science?
Format Requirements
Students will use the required video format of Microsoft Stream or OneDrive to submit the one-minute video in the Blackboard drop box. Use the course standards for video content and quality. Students will use the Blackboard assignment drop box to attach a .pdf file type of the written reflections. Use APA format for writing and the “HLTH/PHED Writing Guidelines’ document for reference to writing format.
