57 Video Lecture: Social justice and/or Human rights Issues Related to the Language and/or Speakers of the Language
Carolyn Castro
Learning Objectives
To identify ways in which languages change and recognize the naturalness of language change (SLO 4), students will record a 7-10-minute video lecture about social justice / human rights issues related to the language or the speakers of the language they chose to investigate (HIP: diversity / global learning). The lecture can take the form of a narrated PowerPoint, https://screenpal.com/ , https://zoom.us/ , Prezi, Canva, or any other video or audio recording app (digital tools) that they are familiar with.
Purpose/Rationale
Instructions
Students will record a 7-10-minute video lecture (experiential learning) focusing on social justice / human rights issues related to the language and/or speakers of the language that they chose to investigate for the research paper. They can create a narrated PowerPoint presentation, use Yuja, Canva, Prezi, Screen Pal, Screencast, or Zoom (open pedagogy). Then, students will create a thread on the Discussion board and post their mini lecture. They will then view and comment on at least one of their classmates’ posts and ask them a question about their presentation to move the discussion forward. Next, they will review their own our thread and answer any questions from the class. Discussion contributions will be graded after a minimum of three (3) posts.
Format Requirements
Each video lecture should be 7-10-minutes in length (experiential learning). Students may choose to create their video lecture using any of the following apps: narrated PowerPoint, Yuja, Canva, Prezi, Screen Pal, Screencast, or Zoom (open pedagogy). Students can choose to appear as a thumbnail on the video or do a voice over.
Rubric/Criteria
The video lecture must include the following components: CONTENT & ORGANIZATION (2-3 mins.) What is the topic of your research paper? Why is this topic interesting, important, or relevant? What area of linguistics is your topic related to? Refer to a chapter from Yule. What are the different subtopics of your paper (outline)? Briefly summarize the main idea of each subtopic. SOCIAL RELEVANCE (3-5 mins.) What social justice / human rights issues pertain to the language and speakers of the language that you chose to investigate? SELF-REFLECTION (2-3 mins.) Is your topic related to a course you have taken, your personal experience, or social issues? Explain. What challenges did you face in writing your research paper? Were you able to address these challenges? If so, explain how. If not, what would you have done differently? Who might find your paper interesting or useful? Explain why. The video lecture will be graded based on the following criteria: content and organization (10 pts.) social relevance (10 pts.) self-reflection (5 pts.) The students’ Discussion contributions will be graded based on the Discussion rubric on Blackboard. This project (video lecture together with all other Discussion posts) will count for 20% of the students’ final grade in the course.
