34 Culture with a Classmate

Dean Schleicher

Cohort 2024

Learning Objectives

Course objective: Students will recognize and accommodate gender and cultural differences in communication settings and appreciate diverse communication styles. HIP: Collaborative Assignments and Projects. Students will learn about what aspects of culture are important to their peers through self-disclosure.

Purpose/Rationale

This assignment ties in with various chapters in the COMM108 textbook: self-concept, culture, communicating in groups and teams, and communicating in interpersonal relationships. When students self-disclose and reveal something significant to a classmate, they will form a closer connection to their peers so I think this assignment will be beneficial in many ways, both relating to our textbook and beyond classroom experiences.

Instructions

Pair students up randomly. They will share with each other examples of their culture. Students will select one aspect about their partner’s culture and create a presentation about it using a digital tool that they will share with the class. Could be PPT with narration, Canva, etc. Culture is an important part of all of our lives and by asking students to share about their own culture, we’ll learn about each other and strengthen classroom bonds.

Format Requirements

Students will create a 2-minute presentation

Rubric/Criteria

I will create a rubric to measure how well students utilize a digital tool to tell the story of culture from a classmate’s perspective.
