Learning Objectives

Chapter Objectives:

  1. Recognize and accommodate gender and cultural differences in communication settings and appreciate diverse communication styles (from the objectives in the syllabus).
  2. Define culture.
  3. Recognize cultural beliefs, values, and attitudes as they are different from your own.

Purpose/Rationale

Instructions

Activity Description:

  1. Students are assigned to small groups.
  2. Each group is assigned a section chapter as follows: Race and Ethnicity Religion & Regional differences Sexual Orientation Disability Age and Generation.
  3. Additional resources are provided to each group such as: TED talk: 12 Pairs of legs Mixed Identity Mind the gap What not to do in Japan.
  4. Each group is tasked to read the sections assigned and take notes. Watch the video references and take notes. The group must combine notes and decide what are the main points/takeaways from each source (text and video). In addition, they are asked to draw from their life experiences to provide examples to support their work and these examples must be featured in the presentation.
  5. Group must agree on a presentation format that can include song, poetry, video and PPT.
  6. Each group makes a presentation.
  7. Class engages in guided discussion about each presentation.
  8. The final product is uploaded to the relevant course module on Bb. These become accessible to all students and serve as study guides for this chapter in preparation for their next test.
