18 Annotation, Reflection, and Response with Hypothesis

Alejandro Leopardi

Cohort 2023

Learning Objectives

The 2 objectives that best fit this assignment are the Writing Process and Expository Writing. Both Collaborative Assignments and Common Intellectual Experiences practices will be utilized. Though students begin working independently on their annotations of an article, they’ll also be using the Hypothesis program to view notes made by their classmates.

Purpose/Rationale

This assignment is inherently renewable since all students can see each other’s annotations on the same text. Because students share their responses with the class, they will understand different perspectives and see that though each person interprets the same information differently, they also share some similarities, creating a sense of community.

Instructions

Assignment: I will post a current news article on Blackboard (a Hypothesis. created assignment). The article will be related to content we’re covering in class and likely connected to a much larger assignment (an essay). Students will need to read the article at least 3 times to fully understand it. Then, they will annotate the article using the various techniques we cover in class; this includes questions (either confusing information or questioning the content/evidence), highlighting sections of importance, etc. Because this is through the Hypothes.is program, students will be able to see each other’s annotations, which helps in building confidence because they see others have similar questions or view sections similarly. Then, based on their notes/annotations, students will draft a reader response that reflects the notes they have taken on the article. The reader’s response can be based on any facet of the article they choose. For example, students can write a response objecting to the findings or conclusions made by the author of the article, or they write a response that uses the content in the article as a springboard to another conversation about that topic.

Format Requirements

The annotations do not have a specific limit but must demonstrate that they have not only read the article but understood it and analyzed it in some way. The reader response will be a minimum of 2 pages and must include direct examples from the original text to demonstrate the integration of ideas from sources as an accompaniment to their own ideas.

Rubric/Criteria

Students will be assessed on their understanding of an argument, as well as their ability to analyze then respond to a text. Ultimately, this assignment will be the first of many that build toward writing essays that integrate source material into their writing.
