36 A New Way to Take Attendance

Dean Schleicher

Cohort 2024

Learning Objectives

I want students to learn more about each other. Attendance can be monotonous, but by empowering students to take attendance in a creative way, it will become the perfect ice breaker to begin class. HIP: Collaborative Assignments and Projects.

Purpose/Rationale

Students will gain experience working together in a small group, which will be beneficial because students will have group work in other college classes, possibly on a team or club, and likely in a job setting.

Instructions

Students will form groups of 3 and they will be assigned a date when their group will take attendance. They will be encouraged to brainstorm a variety of different ways that they could engage the audience by taking attendance and choosing their favorite option. They can play a game, they can ask a question.

Format Requirements

Students will submit to me a record of who was and was not present at the start of class.

Rubric/Criteria

Students will be graded on a rubric that weighs how interactive their attendance game was.
