35 Public Speaking – In the Wild

Dean Schleicher

Cohort 2024

Learning Objectives

Course objective: Students will deliver effective informative and persuasive speeches extemporaneously.

HIP: Community-Based Learning. I want students to learn by doing, and by having them give speeches in an environment other than our classroom, they will gain experience and be able to determine what went well about their speech and what could have been changed.

Purpose/Rationale

If students gain confidence in their speaking skills, that can translate into improved presentations in other classes and a more positive attitude the next time they have a job interview.

Instructions

Task students by going out in a public setting and giving a short (less than 5 minute) speech about a topic of their choosing.  Students will gain public speaking experience and ideally increase their confidence. Public speaking is a necessary part of life, and the sooner that students accept that and stop shying away from public speaking opportunities, they’ll be better equipped to stand in front of people and deliver messages. Students will deliver remarks to the class detailing their experience and what they learned from it.

Format Requirements

A speech lasting less than 5 minutes.

Rubric/Criteria

I will create a rubric to measure how well students completed the assignment
