56 Informational Brochure: Languages Other than English Spoken in the DMV and/or Across the U.S.

Cohort 2024

Learning Objectives

To develop an awareness of linguistic perspectives on issues in first and second language acquisition, language variation, and language universals (SLO 2), students will complete a collaborative assignment / project (HIP: collaborative assignments and projects) using Word, PowerPoint, Canva or other digital tools in the Office 365 suite (digital tools) supported by MC.

Purpose/Rationale

I will encourage students to upload their work online, making it a renewable assignment that is available to others and can be legally used, adapted, or expanded upon by the student or others outside of the class. The informative brochures on linguistics created by each group will then be made available to the MC community when they become part of the course reserves in the MC library. Students will be asked to sign a release form as part of this process: https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/_documents/offices/elite/student-release-of-course-materials.pdf

Instructions

Students will work in groups of 2-3 and create an informative brochure that includes statistics and a “surprising fact” about the languages that they choses to investigate. The brochure will contain the following information: Did you know that…? (surprising fact about the language) Flag of the country/countries where the language is spoken Picture of a speaker of that language that they know personally Facts, figures, statistics, and an image representing the culture of the speakers.

Format Requirements

  • The informative brochure will be a one-page, 8×11 size or slide that describes 2-3 languages.
  • The text and images must fit in one page or slide.
  • There must be 3-4 images or graphics per language to accompany the text.
  • The brochure must use color, readable font, and have enough white space so that it does not look cluttered.
  • Each group will decide on the layout of the brochure.

Rubric/Criteria

I will adapt the following poster rubric and revise some of its language before using it as the assessment tool in grading the group brochures. This group project will be part of the course Assignments and will count for 20% of the overall course grade.
