Module 3: Recognizing AI’s Limitations and Responsibilities

Introduction

While AI tools are powerful, they are not infallible. They generate responses based on patterns in data and do not possess true understanding or awareness. As a responsible user, it is vital to recognize AI’s limitations and ensure that you use its outputs ethically and accurately.

AI cannot verify facts in real time, and it may unintentionally generate biased or inaccurate content. Treat AI as an assistant rather than an unquestionable source of truth.

Understanding AI Limitations:

  • AI lacks real-time verification: AI tools do not have live access to databases and may provide outdated or incorrect information.
  • AI can reflect biases: Since AI is trained on large datasets, it may inadvertently reproduce stereotypes or biased viewpoints.
  • AI cannot replace human judgment: Always critically evaluate AI-generated content before using it in academic or professional contexts.

Best Practices for Ethical Use:

  • Fact-check responses: Verify information through credible sources before accepting AI outputs.
  • Acknowledge AI assistance: If required by academic integrity guidelines, disclose AI use in your work.
  • Avoid over-reliance: Use AI as a tool to enhance your work, not as a substitute for personal effort and critical thinking.

Reflection:

  • Have you ever encountered inaccurate or biased information from AI? How did you handle it?
  • How can you balance the convenience of AI with the responsibility of ensuring accuracy?

Activity: List three actions you will take to verify the accuracy of AI-generated content in your academic work.
