Photo: War Surplus Barracks Used for BCC Campus Expansion, 1947

Black and white photo of a large brick building with a cupola and dormer windows, flanked by leafless trees and parked cars. The building is identified as a former war surplus barracks added to the BCC Campus in 1947.
This historical photograph shows the War Surplus Barracks that were repurposed for educational use at the BCC (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) Campus in the fall of 1947. Originally military structures, the barracks were adapted to house administrative offices, biology and chemistry laboratories, a student lounge, and a bookstore. The building’s modest yet functional architecture reflects the post-WWII era’s emphasis on rapid expansion of public institutions to meet growing educational needs.
